Healthcare industry allocating more IT budgets to cybersecurity, report says
The healthcare industry is highly regulated when it comes to privacy. But does that mean health organizations and hospitals are inherently protected from cybersecurity threats as well?
According to a recent cybersecurity survey conducted by the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), a pattern of cybersecurity threats is a near-universal experience across US healthcare organizations. Meaning, it’s not IF they will be impacted by a cyber-attack, but WHEN.
The 2019 survey of 166 US-based health information security professionals noted that bad actors primarily use emails to gain access to their targets’ data. “The lack of phishing tests in certain health organizations and the pervasiveness of legacy systems [in the industry] raise grave concerns regarding the vulnerability of the healthcare ecosystem,” the report states.
